PREAMBLE- 2024

 

Laborers’ Local 809 in recognition of the enhanced value of post-secondary education, in recognizing that education is a critical component of economic development in the Upper Ohio Valley desire to establish a scholarship fund.

 

LABORERS’ LOCAL 809 SCHOLARSHIP FUND

 

The name of this scholarship fund will be known as the Laborers’ Local 809 Scholarship Fund.

 

AMOUNT OF SCHOLARSHIP

 

Two $1,000.00 scholarships will be awarded this year to dependent high school seniors (Class of 2024) who have enrolled in an accredited institution on a full time basis in the fall of 2024. All other applicants who apply and meet the eligibility criteria and meet all qualifications will receive a $100.00 scholarship. In recognition of the potential for cyclical fluctuations of economic activity in the labor local industry, the Trustees reserve the right to make adjustments to this award on an annual basis.  

 

 

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

 

1. Applicant must be a child or legal dependent of a member of Laborers’ Local 809 who 

    is current in their membership dues. The member must be a dues paying member for at

    least 2 years prior to the application date for the child or legal dependent to be eligible

    to apply for scholarship. The applicant must be accepted into a degree-granting         

    institution to purse a course of study leading to an Associates or Baccalaureate Degree  

    on a full time basis.

 

    It is the general intent of this scholarship program that only children of active members

    shall be eligible to compete. The only exception to this is as follows.

 

         a. Deceased Employees- Children or legal dependents of a deceased member are

             eligible if the member died as an active member in good standing.

 

     Disqualification- If a child or legal dependent of a Local 809 member enters the

     scholarship program and the member goes suspended before the award is distributed,

     the child or legal dependent will not be eligible to receive the award.

 

 

2. Applicant must be a high school graduated of 2024 with a final G.P.A. of 2.50.

    Applicant must enclose a certified copy of high school transcript to validate final

    G.P.A.

3. Applicant must attach an essay of no less than 250 words and no more than 500 words   

    describing your purpose in furthering your education, career objectives goals and how

    you will utilize your education to better the lives of union members.

 

4. Deadline for application is December 1, 2024. Application forms are to be attained and

     submitted at Laborers’ Local 809. It is the responsibility of the applicant to make sure 

     the application has been received at the union hall.

 

 

SELECTION PROCESS

 

 

The Fund selects recipients based on the criteria set forth as follows. To avoid the appearance of bias or impropriety, the Fund will use the following procedure. Each candidate will receive a weighted score for the individual’s G.P.A. and essay. The

G.P.A. shall be given a score from 1-10 (1-2.5-2.60; 2-2.61-2.70; 3-2.71-2.80; 4-2.81-2.90; 5-2.91-3.0; 6-3.1-3.40; 7-3.41-3.70; 8-3.71-3.90; 9-3.91-3.99; 10-4.0+) x  60%. The essay shall be given a score of 1-10 x 40%. The Trustees will chose a separate committee which will judge the essays. The person with the highest score will win. In the event of a tie at the discretion of the Trustees the scholarship award will be granted accordingly. 

 

 

If you are selected as a scholarship recipient, you will be required to submit your certified transcript to establish successful completion of your fall semester. Recipient will not receive the scholarship award if this is not provided by January 31, 2024. If this should occur the next eligible candidate that complies will receive the scholarship amount.
